Emma. The Fresh Gift.

Posted on December 31, 2009

Kim and I are so excited to announce the family who will be receiving the Fresh Gift valued at over $3000! And because I can’t say it any better than this…
My nomination for this gift is the Wright Family….my sisters family.
In september, Emma, 7, fell in the outdoor firepit. She was walking and just tripped but as she fell she said she knew she was going into the fire and so she threw her arms out and turned her body. She did fall in and burn a significant portion of her body. But she did turn so those burns cover her back, shoulders, rear end and legs instead of her face. Emma spent a week in the burn unit at st. johns. She suffered 3rd degree burns so had to have skin grafts. She was able to endure pain that adults wouldn’t even endure with so much courage. In fact, the only reason she got to go home in a week is because she survived a bandage change without iv drugs, surprising the nurses and Drs. and proving she is one tough cookie. After she was home there was more therapy, bandage changes…..life has not been the same since. Emma suffered the injury but the entire family suffered pain. Jonah and Mia were shuffled around for weeks b/c Emmas healing was priority. They’ve been selfless for their sister but at times thats really hard for a 4 year old to comprehend. The worst part of the tragedy is behind them but its far from over. Emma wears compression garments under her clothes 23 hours a day and has to have silicone treatment patches put on each night. The garments are so tight that at first emma had a hard time breathing until she got used to it. For the next year emma will have to wear the garments. In the winter it’s not so bad b/c she can make sure they are covered, she doesn’t like them to show. But when the hot weather hits the family is going to have a whole new set of issues to deal with. Everyone is praying for great scar healing but there is no way to tell what they will look like. I think about emma as a high schooler getting invited to prom or a pool party and feeling less beautiful than the other girls because of her scars. Hopefully she will realize someday that those scars are a sign of her strength, and God’s grace. She’s a different girl. A little more grown up and a little more childlike all at the same time. It’s been amazing to watch the families journey and i think it would be beautiful to document the scars, compression garments and event that effected the entire family!

Emma.
I heard about Emma’s story when it happened and prayed for this family. We had a lot of incredible families sent to us as nominations and one is not more deserving than the next, but we chose Emma because of what Becky wrote. We want to photograph her story. Her life, now. We want to capture her beauty so that she never questions it. We want to capture the love this little girl has been wrapped in. And we want to capture all of it.
We’d like to shoot for an entire day with the Wright family. A fun family session, some life photos at their home with them just being them and then we’d love to get the entire Streb family together. We want to get everyone together NOT because we love big family sessions! HA! But because Mandy and her sisters are best friends. Emma and her cousins are best friends. They are all intertwined in each other’s lives so deeply and we want to capture that too. And of course, we’ll do some special photos with just Emma.
Mandy and Josh… we hope you are excited about this because we sure are! Once warmer weather hits we’ll set a date!
Thanks to everyone that nominated a family… we will definitely do this again!
Happy New Years!

The Beachy family are some of my oldest clients and I adore them. Amy is the mom I strive to be, with a constantly clean car and everything! Dale teaches like Chris so we have lots in common… including the fact that they had three kids in three years like we did. I was actually newly pregnant with Grayson on my first session with them and I remember watching her (Reagan, their youngest was maybe 3, is that right Amy?) and thinking that I maybe had a chance of survival b/c Amy seemed to have it all together! She gave me hope!

Now, a few years later and all I’ve learned is that AMY has it all together, or at least seemingly so, and I never will! HA!

So I’ve had many many sessions with the Beachy family, but the most fun has been this last year doing birthday sessions for all three kids. First Carson, then Luke and now Reagan! Our Playdate sessions are GREAT for this type of shoot… a little time one on one with your birthday girl!

But poor Reagan… her December birthday will always be a fairly chilly session and today was NO exception as it SNOWED the entire time! She was a total trooper though and made it through without shivering too badly! And I love some of the shots we got!

Thanks little miss Reagan for braving the snow and cold with me! You are too cute and it’s been such a pleasure watching you grow!

Watch for some fun Valentine’s Day announcements coming soon!

the puzzle man.

Posted on December 29, 2009

Every Christmas break Chris becomes obsessed with putting together puzzles.

You know, those huge jigsaw puzzles your Grandpa used to do? Yeah. Those.

Well tonight we had a sitter and went to grab a quick dinner before heading to watch the Webster Groves High School boys basketball game… but on the way from dinner to the game we stopped at Target b/c we are out of diapers. And as we’re walking around (because who can go into Target and JUST get what you went there for? I mean seriously!) Chris goes, “OOOH! Let’s go see if they have any great puzzles to buy!”

And he looked like a kid walking into Disney World for the first time or something!

So we head to the games in the kid section, where I’m guessing the puzzles will be, and he excitedly starts picking out his next conquest.

He finally settles on a glow-in-the-dark scene of NYC, panoramic even, and as we’re putting it in the cart a tiny bottle on the puzzle shelf catches his eye.

Puzzle glue.

He tosses it into the cart.

“What is that for?”

“To glue my puzzles.”

Laughing: “Why do you want to glue your puzzles?”

Dead serious: “So we can hang them on the wall of our bedroom!”

Dead serious: “Ummm, I don’t think so.”

“Why?”

“Chris, do you seriously want to do puzzles, glue them together and then decorate our house with them? Not happening!”

He then tells me that he’ll settle for hanging them in his classroom and the laughter I was holding back (kind of) exploded at the thought of him being “that guy.” The teacher that has puzzles all over his classroom. The weird guy. That guy. You know?

He can be such a nerd but MAN do I kind of find it sexy still! HA!

So as we’re finishing our Target trip he asks if we can just skip the basketball game and go home so he can do his new puzzle! And we head home. Because I love him. And he loves his puzzles.

Wanna have a playdate at my house?

Posted on December 29, 2009

AND get some cute photos of your kids?

We are having a Valentine’s Day mini session event at MY house! There will be babysitters in our playroom for the kids, the ones not getting their photo taken at that moment, snacks for all, juice boxes for the kids and maybe some wine for the moms! We’ll empty out our dining room art room, have our mini studio set up and take some fun Valentine’s Day photos of your kids!

Super simple, super quick and super fun for ALL! You are welcome to leave your kids in the playroom for a little while and chat with other WOMEN! You know, in person! Not on the phone with a kid at your feet whining for a snack and the babysitter TV blaring in the background while you try to make dinner. You might actually get to meet new friends and hold REAL conversations! Can you even imagine?

January 16th from 9am-3pm. 20 minute sessions with individual children only… no sibling shots… 10-12 images in an online gallery.  And the best part? It’s only $50! AND you get a free 5×7!

AND we’ll have your galleries ready the following week so we can get orders placed and ready to go for Valentine’s Day!

So come, chat, hang out, get some great photos, meet other women, bring your best friend, get a break from your kids, drink some wine and well, have fun!

January 16th from 9am-3pm!

Email us to get on the list!

{Gorgeous Ainsley Murphy and some Vol.25 overlays}

And just to tease you… we may or may not be talking with the incredible Jessica Rose about some Valentine’s overlays to use on our mini session photos! AND we may or may not be working with a few other artists on AWESOME Valentine’s Day card designs! So awesome!

The Fresh Gift.

Posted on December 28, 2009

As most of you know, Kim and I met when we both went to our first Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep meeting. We instantly bonded b/c I had a tiny+nursing Grayson with me and she, well, loves kids! And since then our friendship has grown obviously, but I love that it started because of our love and devotion to NILMDTS. Having that as our main source of giving back is still at the core of our business… and our clients know that if we are called on a NILMDTS session we might just have to reschedule their session. Because our hearts are always with our NILMDTS families. They just are.

And as we’ve been talking about the last six months of working together and what we hope to do together in 2010 we realized we’d love to give back even more. We know how much photographs can mean to a family. We know how much they mean to our families and we’ve never experienced a great tragedy or hardship.

So we’d like to announce The Fresh Gift.

The Fresh Gift is something we will do periodically. Something we are so excited about. Something we hope you get excited about as well b/c The Fresh Gift will only happen with YOUR help!

We need your help b/c The Fresh Gift is for one deserving family. For whatever reason you think they are deserving. Illness, hospice, house fire, low income, whatever. And to the family that is chosen will be given ONE FREE SESSION with the high-resolution disk AND their choice of either our 5×7 proof book or a 16×20 mounted print!

ONE FREE SESSION!

Here’s how to enter:

1. Email us at info@freshartphotography.com and include the person’s name you want to nominate, WHY you want to nominate them, how you know them, a way to contact that person/family and how you heard about us.

2. You may nominate as many people/families as you’d like but you MAY NOT nominate yourself.

3. You AND the nominee must live within 30 miles from St. Louis county.

4. Email us before midnight on December 30th to have your submission count.

The fun part? The person who’s submission we chose will win a free mini session at our Valentine Mini Session (details coming soon!)!

We will read over all of the submissions and announce the winner either on Dec 31st or Jan 1st. We will NOT mention WHY they won and will not tell any part of their story until we blog their session and can talk to them personally about what they are comfortable with us blogging. Every submission will be completely private and only Kim and I will read them.

The sweet Freeman family is about to grow by THREE! Meaning, Angela will be the mom of FIVE, aged 3 and under! They will be busy for sure, but they seem totally prepared and ready for the adventure!

Angie looks AMAZING. And I think Jodie and I both said it repeatedly, but I’m still in awe of how great she looks just a few weeks before delivery.

and :::grumble::: nary a stretch mark to be found!

We can’t WAIT to meet your THREE new babies!
