So who won the big prize?

Posted on June 29, 2010

I know there are six women out there wondering WHO won the *big* prize and today we will make you wait no further!

But first, we want to send out a BIG FAT THANK YOU to our guest judges!

Candice and Daniel Lanning of The Beautiful Mess in North Carolina… check out there AWESOME new logo and blog! Seriously one of the best logos I’ve ever seen in this industry! AND they are incredible wedding photographers! They are also expecting their FIRST baby and Candice couldn’t be any cuter! I can’t wait to watch them, via blogworld, become parents!

Tami Proffitt of Tami Proffitt Photography in Arizona… she is one of my online BFFs! She was totally instrumental in me gaining confidence with my work in the last few years and she is one of my favorite family photographers! Really, I care more about her friendship then her work but you should seriously check out her work too! :) And her three kiddos are to die for gorgeous! I love when she blogs pics of her kids!

Rich and Alyssa Mattingly of Nickel City Studios in Buffalo… I can’t remember how I found Rich+Alyssa but I adore their blog! They have a super fun+unique style both in their wedding photographs and in the layout of their blog! And I love husband and wife teams… makes me wish Chris didn’t hate my camera so much! HA! I love that they share their life AND their work!

Pascale Wowak of Pascale Wowak Photography in California… Pascale has been featured here before because she has an AWESOME book for new photographers wanting to go pro… she’s also an incredible family photographer who I’ve gotten to know pretty well over the last few years! She is as sweet as she seems on her blog and one of my favorite things she does is use her own kids in a lot of product shots she does for clothing designers! To be able to work with your own kids is awesome in my book!

Jordan Krogman of Jordan Krogman Photography in South Dakota… Jordan has become a good online friend and out of any photographer I know she gets the most amazing everyday images of her kids! I love that! I’m not sure she’s taking clients currently since she has 3 littles at home AND a full-time nursing job but check out her blog b/c you will instantly fall in love with her family! AND her design sense is amazing!

Betsy King of Betsy King Photography in Indiana… Betsy is another one of my online buddies and is ready to POP with baby #2! She’s an awesome family photographer but my favorite work of hers is with her high school seniors! She seriously rocks those sessions! When you head over to her blog though you will INSTANTLY fall in love with her son, Miles! He is the cutest little guy you’ve ever seen!

So what we did was ask each of these photographers to critique and rate the images (girls, we will email you all the critiques soon!) and although there were votes for both #4 AND #5…

The WINNER of either a full family session with low-res disk OR 2 extra hours with us doing whatever you’d like….

TAMMY with #5!

Thanks to all the girls from the May Class that participated and Tammy… email me to let me know what you want your prize to be! Congratulations!

Wow, that was some contest!  Jodie & I are really *so* proud of the work these ladies have produced!  Amazing, work, and ALL of you should be super proud!  This was after just one night together and one month of shooting on their own, so I can only imagine how they are going to grow!

We are now closing the voting on the contest!  Thanks for all the voting!  Tina with her Fresh Boo-Boo!

We’ll announce the judged contest winner later!  :)

Last Wednesday was our 2nd Fresh Class, and it was another great night!  Two people couldn’t make it at the last minute, so we ended up with a really intimate group of 5 students.  And these ladies were on the ball with lots of questions (and some really yummy food to share too!).  Thanks, ladies, for making the night so fun… hope you are shooting every day and things are still clicking!

As we wrap up May’s Fresh Class contest, and the June ladies are working on their entries for next month, we wanted to remind everyone of our July class!  We still have spots open!  July 14th.  We’ll hang out.  And laugh.  And teach you about that fancy camera and how to *really* know how to use it.  And laugh.  Email now to sign up:  info@freshartphotography.com

Sadie | St. Louis Newborn NICU Photographers

Posted on June 25, 2010

(The voting for the Fresh Class will continue through the weekend… just had to get these images up for this family tonight! To vote please leave a comment on the post below…)

Sweet little Sadie was born on June 23rd at 34 weeks. Soon she’ll be here in the studio where Kim and I can spend hours taking amazing photos of her and we absolutely can’t wait! But. Time spent in the NICU, healing and growing, is a special time. It’s not an easy time or a fun time but there is something powerful watching your brand new baby want to live. Becky and Nick may never look back on this time and wish it back, but they will one day look back and smile as Sadie runs through the house playing with her sisters. And so of course, I wanted to capture a piece of it for them.

When looking at these images, please take into account that it was dark in the NICU. And Sadie couldn’t have the lights on at all. So my ISO, for all you photogs out there, was at 3200 or higher. And on my way home I was talking to a friend who joked that I should “embrace the grain” when I told her I was worried about how they would turn out! So as the images came onto my screen you have no idea how big I smiled as I saw them, with the grain. Because I swear, in these photos, there is something magical about that grain. So although my camera settings were pushed to the max (think ISO 3200+, SS 125 and f-stop 1.4) I love the moments it was able to capture for this incredible family.

Becky and Nick, thanks for allowing me to come meet Sadie a bit early and give you these moments to keep forever…

The Fresh Class CONTEST!

Posted on June 25, 2010

Today we are so excited to show you something awesome! The women that attended our May Fresh Class (a beginning camera class for parents, not professionals) have been shooting every single day this month! We encouraged them to shoot EVERY SINGLE DAY because learning how to shoot in manual in one evening is hard and if you don’t shoot every single day you will quickly forget what you learned. Practice practice practice! Seriously, I shoot something every single day still and I’ve been shooting for years! It just keeps you fresh, keeps you learning and keeps you improving!

So at the end of that first class we also issued them a challenge!

We told them that in about a month we would hold a contest for them and they would have to submit their best “FRESH” image! So far I’ve gotten 5 submissions (out of 10 attendees) but I may be adding more as the day goes on.

The voting works two ways…

1. The Popular Vote: We encourage all of our blog readers to vote on their favorite image. Keeping the idea of “FRESH” in mind. Other than that I won’t ask you to look for anything else! But if you are a pro-photog that reads this PLEASE vote and let us know why you chose that image! I’m sure the women will be reading the comments and would love to hear your comments! They also can ask their family and friends to head over here to vote too!

2. The Professional Vote: We’ve asked a small group of professional photographer’s that we respect to look at the entries this weekend and vote. They are looking for clarity, focus, composition, lighting, theme, etc. They will give us a critique of each photo as well as their final choice so that the women can learn what they did well and what they can improve on.

THE PRIZES! First place in the popular vote will receive a $25 gift card to a local store/restaurant. First place in the pro-vote will receive either a full family session with a low-res disk (valued at $1000) or 2 hours of our time to learn even more (they can design our time together, whether that be helping them photograph their own kids, coming on a session with us, etc).

The ladies are really excited to get this going so I will stop typing and show you the image… but first… let me just say how PROUD Kim and I are with each of these submissions! They have really been working hard and we are really excited to see their passion continue to grow!

Please take into consideration that these images are all STRAIGHT OUT OF THE CAMERA with no editing done to them!

#1: Tina (fresh boo-boo)

#2: Missy (fresh fruit)

#3: Pamela (playing in the fresh air)

#4: Tammy (fresh and clean)

#5: Ursa (fresh life)

#6 Lindsey (fresh water)

Aren’t these great?!?

Please submit your vote by leaving a comment on THIS POST! If your comment appears on another post it will not be counted! We will stop voting once all of our pro-photogs have voted sometime this weekend!

Good luck ladies!

One Year Old Bryce | St. Louis Baby Photographers

Posted on June 24, 2010

We LOVE this family! LOVE them. I first met Danielle and John almost two years ago before Bryce was even a thought! Then we got to meet Bryce as one of our first summer newborns last year! Take a look at him then…

And take a look at him NOW! As a big ONE YEAR OLD!

Is he not the cutest? He squished his nose every single time he smiled! It was driving Danielle crazy but we couldn’t stop laughing at it b/c someday his parents really will miss that little smile! That scrunched nose smile!

Enjoy the sneak peek you guys!

One more THEN and NOW comparison! Because they are just so dang fun!

THEN:

NOW:

Thanks Danielle, John and Bryce! Happy Birthday little man!
