Valentine Quick Share #1

I have a few things to share that are quick and easy projects… something that took me less than 20 minutes from start to finish! Easy!

#1: Photo Decorating.

I took 3 current photos of the kids and had them printed as 5×7.  We have three mirrors hanging in our kitchen so it worked perfectly, but you could do this anywhere… windows, your door, your fridge, a wall, etc.

Then all I did was staple them to a ribbon, add some Valentine stickers and tape the ribbon to the back of the mirrors! SO EASY!

You could totally get the kids involved with this and let them decorate their own photo or something, but I did this really fast while they were working on another craft and since Grayson couldn't do his own anyway… ok. You got me. I wanted these cute and not kid-cute but mommy-cute. Sue me.

Here are some close-ups:

A cute way to decorate don't you think?

And SO easy!

day one.

Welcomevday

Let's start this week out by saying that I am by NO means a craft expert! NOT AT ALL. And most of these ideas I found somewhere else. And nothing is perfect! So you are about to watch a semi-good crafter copy some fun projects in a very imperfect manner!

Does that make you excited to read on or what?

Day one is a great craft to do with your kids, from as young as mine (2 and 3) to whatever age b/c you can allow your child to do different parts of this craft to make it harder+easier depending.

1. Choose some Valentine colored crayons. We picked red and pink of course!

2. Peel the paper.

20090124_0025

(my girls liked this part for all of 5 seconds and then I peeled as fast as I could so they wouldn't completely lose interest!)

3. Buy a cheap cheese grater that you don't mind turning over to your craft drawer and start shaving the crayons. I tried to allow the girls to do this part but I was terrified of scraped knuckles, so again, I should have maybe done this part ahead of time. Live and learn. I also grated all the crayons into a bowl first (something the photo doesn't depict).

20090124_0026

4. Lay a piece of wax paper down (we sat on the floor so I put an old beach towel down to protect the carpet) and put the shaving on the paper. The girls LOVED this part! Getting messy a bit, being allowed to choose where to sprinkle the shavings, etc.

20090124_0028

5. Cover with a second piece of waxed paper. Wax sides together (this is important!).

20090124_0029

6. Start lightly pressing with your iron (I didn't heat mine very hot since the girls were with me and it worked perfectly. Oh, and turn the steam off!

20090124_0031
20090124_0032

7. Heat and press until the shavings have melted. Play around here and experiment! I slid the iron to show the girls how the melted crayon would squirt out of the edges of the paper, I took the tip and "drew" with the liquid crayon, etc. There is NO right or wrong!

A view when held up at the window…

8. The paper+crayon dries really quickly (make sure you melt the entire paper so that the wax paper melts together even where there is no crayon shavings) and then I cut hearts out of the paper.

20090124_0037

I just free-hand cut the hearts but you could trace a cookie cutter or something too!

9. You could stop here and have cute hearts for your kids to stick in their Valentine cards or to glue on paper or whatever, but I like to take our craft projects and make them into decorations as often as possible (it makes me smile to see my kid's art work as decoration) so I took this a step further. I used a small hole punch and punched a hole in each heart. Then I just tied a string (fishing line might have looked better but I always use what I have on hand) to the hole. I wanted to hang ours on our front door so I taped a ribbon across the window and then tied the strings to the ribbon (the ribbon ran at the same height as the break in the screen door glass so from the outside you didn't see the ribbon at all).

from the inside and the outside…

The girls love looking at them and haven't tried to pull them off (yet!). And it looks so cute hanging beneath the red berry wreath on our door! This could be cute at any window though!

I got this idea from Martha Stewart (my idol) and you can find it online HERE

Of course Martha's look way way better than mine do! Also, these hearts are from just one piece of paper… we still have five papers we made so I will either add more here or we will fill other windows in our house with fun and festive hearts!

More to come tomorrow….

it’s not as easy as it looks.

Last week my client+friend, Jen, came over with her son Lucas to hang out for a bit and eat lunch with us! It was a nice day so before they went home we walked to the park that is 4 doors down from us!

Parker just flies down that slide!

Then since I had another adult with me I handed Jen my camera to take some shots of me interacting with the kids! I about died when I looked at what she got…

Working away this snowy Sunday!

Valentine’s Day Week starts tomorrow!

Vdayblog

All this coming week I will be posting decorating ideas, kid craft ideas and gift ideas! ALL items that I have created myself either from ideas I got somewhere and others I thought of myself. Today I've been trying to get photographs of everything but I will tell you now, they are not the best! It is hard to photograph non-people items! I like smiles and running and laughter and bodies I guess. Felt hearts are hard to capture!

But the projects might just inspire you to create something yourself so tune in this week! Loveblog

much better.

On the way home from the Art Museum today Chris was joking around with the girls…

Bailey: Daddy, you're so silly!

Me: If Daddy is silly, what is Mommy?

Bailey: Much better.

20090124_0005b

We obviously were cracking up and while we were laughing she said,

"Mommy, you're the queen!"

20090124_0008b

She then proceeded to tell us that her and Parker are the princesses but Grayson is a soccer player b/c he's a boy. And you know, boys play soccer and girls are princesses. But then she said,

"I be a soccer player when I be 5. That good Daddy?"

20090124_0016b

Oh my gosh. She's going to be trouble!

And just for good measure…

20090124_0018b

Gotta keep things even you know?

Hope you had a good Saturday!

a fat baby to start your day off right!

Happy Friday!

punishment.

I mentioned that Parker's new hobby is to spread shampoo from here to kingdom come. It's a good hobby and makes the upstairs smell nice and mango fresh. Could be worse I guess, she could spread poop everywhere.

Anyway.

At one point last weekend we'd had it. One point, a million points, whatever. We'd had it. And while I was upstairs cleaning up Chris made Parker sit on a blanket and play. She wasn't allowed to get up and if she did a spanking was threatened. He gave her blocks and animals and ordered her to build a zoo!

And she did.

And I ran down the stairs to capture it.

Doesn't she look so sad?

an album sneak peek!

Nicole was a bride from the fall and I just finished her album tonight. I know she's excited to see it and so I thought I would give her a page from her album to tide her over!

I love designing albums, whether for weddings or birthdays or from a family photo session or just whatever! I love it! It combines both my loves… design+photos!

Nicole, I hope you like this peek!

Wedding album page

This is obviously a 2-page spread and it's for a 10×10 album.

Oh, and for everyone that laughed "with me" in the last post… don't worry, I do laugh about it! Parker is a little devil but she is a sweet kid. Someday she will stop making messes and pooping in her pants and climbing the furniture and be my favorite kid around! She's melts my heart when she wants to cuddle and have me scratch her arms. She loves to be held and is still little enough to not break my arms (when did Bailey get so big?). She is a sweet little thing that knows every single button to push in her already tired mommy!

AnYwAy!

Big news on the home front… my niece said her first word today! At ten months old! She's brilliant!

And now back to work as it's just about midnight and I still have loads of things to wrap up!

oh wednesday.

Have you all seen this illustration yet?  I find it fascinating. And I love it.

——————————————

So this kid. Oh my soul, this kid!

20090114_0062blog

The Lord knows I love her. I do. And yes, I say that to myself so many times a day I've lost count, just trying to remind myself or convince myself or something! Because MAN she is on my last nerve!

Her new favorite hobby is to take the expensive Loreal kids shampoo and squirt it from one end of the playroom to the other. This happened multiple times over the weekend and every single time it took me at least an hour to clean up b/c a pile of SOAP is hard to clean up! It just smears around and gets bubbly and soapy and although it smells so yummy it is a royal pain in my ass. Seriously.

My friend suggested the next time she does it we put a little of the shampoo on her tongue. Bar of soap in the mouth anyone? I think it's genius and since no other form of punishment is working and we can't physically keep her out of the bathroom and our eyes on her 24-7 I am seriously going to try it if I smell mango orange shampoo again!

She has also become best friends with the three foot stools in our house. One sits next to a rocking chair to be used as a foot rest/table, one is for the potty and one if for washing hands. Little miss Parker, however, has now figured out that the potty stool is also a great way to get water from the door of the fridge "ah by mesef". And the foot stool is tall enough to get her to my bed where she can jump until her heart's content (or until I find her). And the hand washing stool is perfect for putting next to Gray's crib to wake him up. Because you know, I don't value naps in this house.

Parker has also discovered a love of scissors, which I have fostered by giving the girls some great cutting work (that I need to photograph and share here) lately. And that's ok, scissors are so great for their hand-eye coordination and just hand dexterity in general. It's not ok when you cut hair (luckily no big deal) or mail or photos. Not so ok.

Today she figured out how to climb into the exersaucer and for once I am fully on board with this new interest. She sat "playing baby" for almost 20 minutes today! Twenty minutes of her in my sight, totally confined so I could answer emails! Lovely! I did take photos of that!

I love her but MAN does she test me!

———————————–

TODAY: It started out ok in the fact that I found time to straighten up the house before leaving, where as usually to get us all out the door I am throwing things everywhere and ignoring the toys+breakfast mess+floor etc. We picked up the house and walked outside to take Bails to school and Gray to the chiropractor. And that's when I locked my keys in the car. Luckily with no kids inside! Our sweet friend Kurt drove Bails to school for me and we missed Gray's appointment. Not the end of the world but when I have a plan for my day that includes a trip to the bank and of course my ever necessary Mnt Dew, but then gets taken away from me I get frustrated!

OH MAN OH MAN OH MAN.

You will not believe that as I was typing that I hear footsteps on the stairs (the girls are not allowed to leave their bedroom at nap time) so I go to investigate and I find a NAKED Parker with POOP EVERYWHERE. WTF?!?!

She pooped in her diaper (oh yes. I am forcing the kid to wear diapers b/c her accidents were pushing me over the edge), took it off (laying it nicely and face down on the annoying elmo chair) and I guess was coming downstairs to find me, I don't know. I took her back upstairs and found the toilet paper ALL OVER the bathroom that she'd tried wiping herself with. Nice. And I saw the clothes in her room that she'd tried to put back on, poop smeared.

As I type I am wanting to scream but instead am just silently chanting, "i love that kid. i love her. i love that kid. i love her."
