my tag line.
August 25, 2009 – 6:22 am
I don’t have a tag line for my business. For Jodified. And I need one.
My hands down favorite tag lines are these:
Ali Edwards: Capture Life, Create Art.
and
Sarah Q Photography: Photography for happy people
But I am just stuck.
I’ve been stuck for about a year now actually.
And every time I print a new marketing piece it reminds me just how STUCK I am.
So I am asking all of you for help!
Remember when you named our baby?
This isn’t quite so dramatic but I would love your help!
Leave your idea in the comments on THIS post and I will think of something great to give the winner… IF there is a winner!
Get creative and HELP ME PLEASE!
Thanks!

the sisters.
August 23, 2009 – 9:58 pm
If you’ve followed my blog for a while you know I have a sister. And she’s one of my best friends. And she’s awesome. And she blogs. HERE.
You might also remember that she’s pregnant with their second baby, which means I get to become Aunt JoJo to another little… GIRL!
YEP! She’s having a GIRL!
Which means Samantha gets a sister! And that makes me SO happy!
Especially after being able to watch my little girls together for the last 2+ years. There is seriously nothing like sisters.

I love my girls!

Just have to throw in this photo of Parker and her sheep… blowing this up for above her bed I think!

And here’s my sweet niece… the soon-to-be BIG sister!

I love this shot of her little feet…

Then one night when they were in town we decided we wanted to try to get a shot of all four kids together. BUT when those kids are ages 1, 1, 2 and 4… ummm… that’s just about impossible.
SO. Rather than put any kind of pressure on ourselves we went outside post bath time one night with them all in their jammies, threw a quilt in our yard and went for it!
The photos are NOT EXACTLY perfection. Ahem. AT ALL. But they totally make me laugh b/c it is SO them!

You will notice my kids sleep in JUNK. I started collecting random t-shirts a couple of years ago b/c we always seem to do our painting in the morning so now I don’t worry about them getting messy, we just keep our jammies on until after we CREATE! They just never look cute at bedtime anymore!

And then even though we hadn’t even showered yet that day, or at least I hadn’t (!), we decided we needed to jump in there too!
A perfect photo? Nope. Our life? Yep.
And then as I was digging around for photos I found what I thought was a super sweet photo of my sister and her sleepy daughter.
HOWEVER.

What I really found was my niece giving me the finger! HA!
CONGRATS Abbie, Chris and Sam… we can’t wait to meet that new baby girl!
love light: brandi+jeff
August 23, 2009 – 1:15 pm
Last night I had a Love Light with my friends Brandi and Jeff. We started at 9pm and I dropped them back at their car at 11pm. And then I came home and immediately uploaded the images to my computer and started fussing with a few of them b/c I just dig the Love Lights so much sleep was unimportant! If I could do a Love Light each week I would be a very happy girl!
Thanks Brandi and Jeff… thanks for being open to my ideas, my locations and for just being so fun to work with! You guys ROCKED this session!

As we were driving around and I was looking for light I mentioned that I’ve been wanting to try something on a Love Light with glow sticks… and since they seemed up for it I ran home, grabbed the glow sticks and we headed to a dark park!
I obviously need work on this as I’ve never done this kind of shot before… but the possibilities are ENDLESS for Love Light sessions! I can’t wait to read up more on this kind of shooting or just get out there and figure it out myself!

They each drew a heart… while I dragged the hell out of my shutter!
Do any photographers out there know a good resource for learning this kind of shooting technique??? Or even what it’s called? Thanks!
TODAY: Chris and I worked in the yard for a while this morning since the weather KICKS ASS today and he’s headed back out there once the younguns are in bed for naps. I’m working away in the office right now and Bailey got to go see Mary Poppins at The Fox with Grandma! Lucky girl! We’re considering a big early Christmas present to the kids in the form of a new trampoline this afternoon too, since they’re CHEAP at Sams right now… we’ll see! It’s the last day before the week starts… ENJOY IT!
i had a dream this morning when chris let me go back to sleep for a little while
August 22, 2009 – 9:53 am
and I don’t know if it was my guilt that he was up with the kids and I was sleeping or WHAT but my dream was that he had cancer and was dying. And in the dream we were on vacation with his parents and my parents just waiting for him to die. Because the doctor had given him three weeks to live. But what was even worse was that Grayson had the same diagnosis. So we were all waiting for both of them. And I just kept thinking how empty my life would be without my two men. And I woke up crying.
Does that ever happen to you?
And when I woke up it was because Chris came in to cuddle with me in bed. And when I told him about my dream he called for the girls to come cuddle with me too. And then it turned into a wrestling match. And everyone was giggling and tickling and laughing. And my world was right again.
I hate that though, when I have a dream so life-like I wake up worried it’s actually true.
Anyway, so in thinking about Chris and what I would do if anything ever happened to him I realized that I never told you guys that HE TURNED 30 while we were on vacation in Florida!
30.
I turn 30 in October but right now I’m NOT so I signed his card, “love, your 20-something wife!”
His birthday was one of my favorite days on vacation! The kids and I had gone to the dollar store before we left and bought 30 gifts. STUPID little things that they had a blast picking out for him. So we wrapped them ALL up, put number on them and that was what he opened in the morning. We also made him his favorite breakfast, he had free time at the beach and got in a good nap.
The best part though was that evening we got to go out to dinner, WITHOUT our children! And with our best friends, Kevin and Angie! So we were getting ready to walk out the door and leave our poor parents with all SIX kids when I showed him a few more gifts in the living room. He was surprised b/c he really thought the huge amount of CRAP he’d opened that morning were all of his gifts. But OH NO. I had a HUGE surprise for him!
PLAYSTATION 3!
And of course we had to get him his favorite game so my parents bought him the soccer game, whatever it’s called.
And the MacBryde’s got him a huge bottle of Makers Mark.
The perfect set of gifts! HA!
He was SO surprised b/c he’s wanted one for a while and I kept saying it was too expensive or that I didn’t want video games in the house or whatever. It was awesome. He was so happy!
Anyway, then we went to dinner but on the way the sun was setting and it was BEAUTIFUL light so I made Kevin pull over, we ran across a random boardwalk and we took a few photos…

Wanna know who was MOST excited about C turning 30? These guys! Our ALMOST 40 year old friends! HA! I know Ang can’t WAIT until I hit the big 30!
Then I handed Angie my camera and had her take a few of C and I… these make me SO happy!

Curious what’s so funny?
This guy walked in front of us and Angie snapped a photo. We were dying.

Sorry, totally mean but at the time also totally funny!
Ahem.

Man I love this guy. And with his 30 birthday we have officially known each other for more than half our lives. We met freshman year at age 14. I love that.

The boys! I love this next one!

I told them they didn’t look natural enough, that they needed to laugh or something. HA!

So when it was our turn the guys told us to act surprised! Such idiots!

I’m putting this one in here b/c I asked Angie to take a couple of me… thinking it might be nice to have a head shot for the website or something. But all of the ones where I looked at the camera I hated. But this one of me laughing at Chris is one of the ONLY photos of myself I’ve ever liked. So here it is! And all I can think about when looking at it is, “man do I have a lot of freckles!” HA!
So anyway.
Happy Saturday!
Chris who is NOT dying from cancer is at soccer, Grayman is sleeping and when he wakes up the kids and I are heading out to enjoy this day! The park, maybe a stop at the soccer field, the Farmer’s Market, who knows. It’s beautiful out! GO!
with the birth of my iPhone…
August 21, 2009 – 9:24 am
I love my iPhone.
More than I ever believed I could love a phone.
It gets my email, I can check my Reader, read Tweets, obviously answer the phone and get texts. Not to mention it has games on it that keep the girls busy in awful places like doctor’s offices and the grocery store. And it’s a point and shoot camera when I need a quick snap. Or a video camera when my kids are being SO cute I need to record them on the fly.
It’s awesome.

The kids with cousin Sam at the Magic House last week.

The kids at the car wash watching our car go through.

The park yesterday.
I love my iPhone. I wouldn’t have random snapshots like that of our life without it.
What I’ve noticed myself doing with it though is checking it constantly. I get a lot of emails a day. Sometimes over 100. So my iPhone makes a noise every time an email comes through. And of course I grab it and see what it is right away.
And what I noticed yesterday, on our way home from the park, is that I do it while driving.
And that scares the crap out of me.
Reading an email while driving.
While driving my KIDS.
And until yesterday I wasn’t even thinking about it.
Phone makes noise, I pick up phone, read what I need to read, put phone down without a thought in my head. Like it’s some kind of automatic response. Like I was programmed to do it even though I’ve only had the darn thing like 3 weeks.
WTF?
So I turned off the email noise maker thingy on my phone and have made a conscious effort to ignore the phone while driving.
But then, as if God really wanted to drive the point home with me today, I came across a You Tube video that had me practically sobbing.
I’m going to link it here b/c I think it makes an awesome point, one that ALL OF US needs to be reminded of (PUT THE PHONE DOWN)…
BUT…
It seriously contains EXPLICIT material YOU DO NOT WANT YOUR CHILDREN TO SEE!
So if your kids are around DO NOT WATCH THIS VIDEO.
That’s my warning and now I’m posting it…
I was effected deeply by this video and luckily I realized my idiocy YESTERDAY before anything tragic happened. But I’d love to hear your thoughts… do you text and drive? Read emails? Tweet? Talk?
how many of you are standing on the dock?
August 20, 2009 – 10:53 pm
do you read zack arias?
if not you should. he’s incredibly talented.
i popped over to his blog tonight and when i read THIS post I thought a lot about myself. I won’t go into details here b/c well, I’ve had a migraine all day, I’m tired, it’s time for bed and this is my third post here today and enough is enough.
But I just couldn’t go to bed without sharing these links.
Go HERE.
Watch the video. Read the post. Donate if you’re called.
I sent in $20. One night of pizza to help change someone’s life.
I’m not kidding when I tell you that tears were streaming down my face at how good God is. God brought that man to Zack’s door. He brought him to his blog. And the way God is using blogs makes me so stinking happy.
Go read, watch and be changed.
yes. yes. yes. big is certainly better.
August 20, 2009 – 7:04 pm
I always encourage my clients to order BIG prints. Because I swear that 99% of the population still thinks an 8×10 is an enlargement! UGH!
Seriously, go BIG people!
Anyway, I encourage this b/c there is seriously NOTHING like having your children or your family or your pet or your grandchildren as the ART WORK in your home.
But until recently I hadn’t taken much of my own advice. Mainly b/c GOING BIG isn’t always cheap. And we’ve always had a tight budget. But the nice thing about having 20+ sessions a month is adding a little wiggle room to our budget! And what do you guess I’m spending some of that wiggle room on?
US.
That simple.
US.
I walk in my house now and see US on our wall and can’t look away. I am enthralled. I am in love. Pure and simple.
AND I’M GOING BIGGER!
As soon as Lyndsay sent me our photos I put an order in for one wall in our home that desperately needed updating…

It’s a big wall, very high ceilings and I like very symmetrical photo patterns so I got out my tape measure late that night and began to plan the new wall… THIS is what I ended up with!

(sorry for the craptastic photos… it was evening when i got them hung and DARK in the house!)
I love it. It’s right outside my office door and I can’t tell you how many times a day I turn around and just stare at those photos!
I have two orders in for canvases and I want to do a BIG 30×40 soon but for now, this makes me incredibly happy.
The sizes are 15×30 at the bottom, 16×24 of me and C and then two 11×11′s. The top b/w photo I took of Bailey’s foot prints and the rest are from Lyndsay.
I had them printed on the standout mount and LOVE it. Perfect for our old plaster walls b/c they are lightweight, ready to hang (no frames needed) and I use a straight pin to hang them in our old walls.

They are about 1/2 inch thick.
Anyway, I love it.
Thanks again Lyndsay!!!
The Jodified Recipe

Edited To Add…
I thought I should preface this post with WHY I am offering this new service of mentoring if you will. I get a lot of emails from other photographers asking questions. Random questions from how did I process that photo to how do you start a blog to what kind of marketing materials do you use. And the other day, after spending two hours answering ONLY these kinds of emails I realized that was a lot of time. And my time is so limited now that Chris is back at school. So I thought I would offer photographers a place to come where they can get real answers to their questions but make it so that I can legitimize spending so much time answering.
This it not to say that I won’t still answer the occasional random question and this is also not to say that I’m frustrated by all the questions I get. The opposite actually! I love connecting with other photographers and bouncing ideas back and forth. I just thought I would take asking me one or two random questions a little further if you’d really like more help. So don’t feel bad emailing questions still… I’m not charging for that, this is just for those of you that might like to take it a few steps father!

Do you cook?
I wish I did. Instead we know our pizza delivery people by name. Literally.
But my mom? She’s an incredible cook. And when we eat at her house I always wish I could cook like she can. But I know I don’t have it in me to be a good cook. There’s no desire there, no drive. I like pizza just fine thankyouverymuch. My sister on the other hand is also a great cook. She calls my mom for her recipes all the time. And my mom, God love her, copies me to her recipe emails hoping, I’m sure, I will read it and suddenly be inspired to do more than dial for my dinner.
But photography? I’m always working to be better. I’m tweaking this and reevaluating that, changing this and adding that. The recipe for success in my business is constantly changing and ever evolving. However there are certain things that always stay the same. Certain ingredients that have helped me create the recipe that works for Jodified the best.
And I’d love to share it with you.
Have you ever wished someone would look at your work and give you their absolute honest opinion? Do you have a million questions and wish you had answers that would help move you in a direction to grow your business? Are you confident in your brand? Do your marketing materials pop? Are your clients happy? Is your workflow fast enough?
If you’d like to get some unbiased thoughts on your work you’ve come to the right place. I will be nice but honest. I won’t sugar coat things b/c that won’t help you grow. I will look at your work, analyze your website, read your blog and get ready to answer any questions you throw at me.
The only things I WILL NOT talk about are shooting techniques, how to use your camera and post-processing. If you want to know what an aperture does and how to use actions this is not the right place.
I WILL talk about any of the following: branding, advertising, marketing, blogging, session planning, family/child interaction, work flow and client relationships… or anything else you can think of aside from HOW to take a photograph!
Mac N’ Cheese: $95
- 5 questions (sent via email)
- 1 session critique
- 1 hour phone call to discuss
Fillet Mignon: $275
- 10 questions (sent via email)
- 1 session critique
- Two, 2 hour phone calls to discuss
- One last 1 hour phone call a month later to talk about possible changes that had been made
Must have website and/or blog to be considered. Limited availability per month. Email me if interested at jodie@jodified.com
